This is a clean-room, decompilation-driven port of the 1991 Apogee Software shareware classic Crystal Caves Episode 1 developed by vital101. Written in freestanding C and compiled to WebAssembly, it runs directly in modern web browsers without DOSBox or emulators. The port re-implements the original game logic and verifies level rendering, physics, cell events, and sound effects frame-for-frame against the original DOS binary.
How to play
Default keyboard controls adhere to the original DOS layout with modern browser additions:
- Left / Right Arrow: Move
- Ctrl, Space, or Up Arrow: Jump
- Alt: Fire or interact
- Esc or F1: Help menu
- P: Pause
Key bindings can be modified in the help menu and are saved locally. Gamepads are supported via the Gamepad API but disabled by default. On touch devices, an on-screen virtual pad and helper keyboard buttons appear automatically.
What you need
Nothing to install or upload. The page runs the shareware episode.
Good to know
- Saves (slots 0–9), settings, and high scores are preserved entirely client-side using browser
localStorage. - On macOS, using
SpaceorUp Arrowto jump avoids system shortcut conflicts when holdingCtrl.
