III Web is a browser build of the PC version of Grand Theft Auto III, hosted by Quenq, which describes it as the full game. It runs on re3, the community's reverse-engineered engine for the game, compiled to WebAssembly. Assets stream in as you play, so there is nothing to download or install, and the player adds a save manager, a mod manager and on-screen touch controls.
How to play
- Open the page and choose Play Game. The first load can take a while; then click to start.
- In Save Manager, download your
.bsave files as backups or upload saves from the PC or PS2 versions. - In Mod Manager, upload
.dff,.txd,.color image files to replace vehicle, weapon, character and building models, textures or the player skin. A new skin is picked under Esc, Options, Player Setup. CLEO scripts, ENB and HUD replacements aren't supported. - On touch screens, the Cheats button opens the device keyboard so you can type cheat codes.
What you need
- Browser: Chrome, Brave, Edge, Firefox or Safari on PC, Mac or Chromebook, with hardware acceleration turned on (in Chrome: Settings, System, "Use graphics acceleration when available").
- Input: an Xbox, PlayStation or generic USB gamepad connected before launch, or on-screen touch controls on phones and touchscreen laptops.
- Files: none.
Good to know
- Saves are kept in your browser's storage, so clearing site data deletes them. Download backups from Save Manager.
- Take-Two sent DMCA notices over re3 and reVC in 2021 and sued people behind them; in 2023 it dismissed its claims against the four named defendants.
- The original game was developed by DMA Design and published by Rockstar Games: PlayStation 2 in 2001, Windows in 2002.
