Outbreak·Web runs Capcom's Resident Evil Outbreak and Outbreak File #2 (PlayStation 2) in a browser tab, alone or in online rooms. It is built with the open-source ps2-web-recomp toolchain, which translates PS2 code ahead of time into WebAssembly and pairs it with a runtime that renders through WebGPU. All ten scenarios are included, five per file, and there is no disc image to provide. The site does not name its developer.
How to play
- Choose File #1 (the five original scenarios) or File #2 (five new ones) and press Play. A random player name is assigned; change it in Settings.
- On the title screen press Start (Enter). For online play choose NETWORK PLAY, enter an area, then create or join a room.
- Default keys: WASD for the D-pad, J for Cross (confirm), K for Circle (run, cancel), Enter for Start, F1 for the controls list. Movement uses tank controls, and keys can be remapped in Settings.
- Saves go to a virtual memory card in your browser, one per file, and can be exported or imported as a
.ps2file. Clearing browser data or using a private window loses the card.
What you need
- Browser: a recent one with WebGPU. The site says the game is slow without it and names current Chrome, Edge or Safari as much faster. A startup check reports an unsupported browser if WebAssembly features such as JSPI are missing.
- Input: keyboard, or a gamepad with the standard layout; a second gamepad is player 2. Touch screens get on-screen controls.
- Files: none. The engine is about 28 MB, and the rest loads in the background.
Good to know
- Online rooms run on a server based on the Bioserver projects, and the page lists open ones. Press coverage describes up to four players per room.
- The site calls itself an unofficial preservation project not affiliated with Capcom; its server source code is listed as coming soon.
- The interface comes in seven languages, including English and Spanish. Capcom released Outbreak in Japan in 2003 and File #2 in 2004.
