OpenLara is an open-source engine that re-implements the Tomb Raider engine, written by Timur Gagiev (XProger) since 2016. The web build linked here dates from October 2017. It was compiled to asm.js, draws with WebGL and plays the title screen, Lara's Home and the first two levels of the 1996 game, in their PlayStation versions.
How to play
- Open the page. The game fills the window and loads the title screen first; other levels download when you select them. An on-screen tip reads "Press H for help", and H shows or hides the controls list.
- On the title screen, the passport starts a new game in the Caves or lets you select Caves or City of Vilcabamba. The Lara's Home item in the ring opens her house.
- Documented controls: arrow keys move (Up runs, Down steps back), Shift walks, Ctrl is the action key, Space draws weapons, D jumps, Z and X sidestep, A rolls, V switches to first person, Tab opens the inventory and Alt+Enter toggles fullscreen.
- After City of Vilcabamba the build returns to the title screen. Load Game works as a level select, and the Controls item reports that it is not implemented.
What you need
- A browser with WebGL. The page uses asm.js, so WebAssembly is not required.
- Keyboard, gamepad or touch; the in-game help names all three. Touch input shows on-screen buttons.
- No game files. This build hides its Browse Level button, so you can't load your own levels here.
Good to know
- The project README links a newer WebGL page at xproger.info, whose file picker also accepts
.PHD,.PSX,.TR2and.TR4levels. - GamingOnLinux, Phoronix and Destructoid wrote about the WebGL demo in April 2017; Destructoid said only the second level was playable then.
- Gagiev later joined Saber Interactive for the official Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, and in February 2024 he said OpenLara was on hold. The repository has still received community commits into 2026.
- Tomb Raider was developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive in 1996. OpenLara is BSD 2-clause licensed; source on GitHub.
