Diablo Web is a browser client for the original Diablo. Nikita Maksimov wrote the React and TypeScript shell that handles loading, input, storage and saves around an existing WebAssembly build of the game engine. The engine comes from devilution, a reconstruction of Blizzard North's code, and an earlier browser port by d07RiV. You can start the limited shareware version with one click, or load your own DIABDAT.MPQ to play the full game.
How to play
- Choose Play Free Demo on the start screen. The shareware data (
spawn.mpq) downloads on first use; the start screen quotes 25 to 50 MB. The demo has limited content. - For the full game, choose Load Your MPQ, or drop
DIABDAT.MPQfrom your own copy of Diablo onto the start screen. - The start screen's Controls, limitations & game files section has in-app notes and a tool that compresses an MPQ to reduce its size.
- Saves stay in your browser (IndexedDB). Use Manage Saves to download them, or drop a
.svfile on the start screen to import one. There is no cloud saving.
What you need
- A browser with WebAssembly, Web Workers, IndexedDB and Web Locks. Without Web Locks the app won't open save storage.
- A mouse and keyboard work best. Touch controls exist and landscape gives the game more room, but the project says mobile controls still need work. No gamepad support is documented.
- Files: none for the demo. The full game needs
DIABDAT.MPQfrom your own copy.
Good to know
- Keep the game open in one tab or window. If you see "Game already open", close other Diablo Web tabs and windows, including the installed app, then choose Try Again. Don't clear browser data to fix it, or you lose your saves.
- Online multiplayer is described as experimental and not ready for ordinary play.
- The upstream DiabloWeb by d07RiV appeared in 2019 and drew coverage again in August 2024. This client's repository dates from August 2024.
- The original Diablo was developed by Blizzard North and began shipping in December 1996.
