Underground 2 Revived runs the 2004 PC game Need for Speed: Underground 2 in the browser. The port by th0mk builds on Talha Müderrisoğlu's NFSU2Recomp: the game's x86 code is translated to C (static recompilation) and compiled to WebAssembly, with Direct3D 9 drawn through WebGPU. The site adds shared free roam and an online mode, with no account needed.
How to play
- Open the site and press Play. Game data downloads as needed and stays cached; "Preload the game data" fetches about 2 GB up front, without the movies.
- Drive with the arrow keys or W A S D. Alt is nitrous, Space the handbrake, Shift and Ctrl shift gears, C changes the camera, R respawns, and Esc or P pauses. Keys can be changed under Options, Controls.
- Turn on "Free roam with others" under Online to share the city; friends who enter the same crew name see each other. The game's Online menu runs races on the project's own server.
- Save from the pause menu (Esc or Start, Garage, Save). Saves stay in the browser, which may clear them when the disk is nearly full, so download a backup or use cloud saves.
What you need
- Browser: one with WebGPU. The site tests Chrome 140 or newer and Firefox 145 or newer (Firefox has WebGPU on Windows and on Macs with Apple chips). iPhone and iPad need iOS or iPadOS 26; Android needs Chrome on Android 12 or newer with a supported GPU.
- Input: keyboard, Xbox or PlayStation controller, a steering wheel such as the Logitech G29 (no force feedback), or touch controls.
- Files: none. Self-hosting from the source code needs your own copy of the v1.2 North American
SPEED2.EXE.
Good to know
- The site says it runs at up to 120 fps, and the player's guide lists 16 languages.
- EA shut down the original online servers in 2006, which is why the Online menu uses this project's server.
- It is a fan project not affiliated with EA, and its README says it was built with the help of Claude Code. The port appeared in October 2026; the original came from EA Black Box in November 2004.
