Wasm Doom is Cloudflare's WebAssembly build of Chocolate Doom, published in May 2021 to show off Cloudflare Workers, WebSockets and Durable Objects. Chocolate Doom is a community-maintained source port that stays close to the original DOS release; Cloudflare compiled it with Emscripten and wrote a network driver that carries Doom's multiplayer packets over WebSockets. The page loads the shareware doom1.wad, which holds Episode 1, and offers solo play or online multiplayer for up to four people.
How to play
- Choose Play Solo to start at once.
- For multiplayer, choose Start Multiplayer, enter a name and pick Deathmatch or Cooperative. The page creates a link to share. Friends can join until the host presses Space to start; a link opened after that is turned away.
- Controls: the mouse, the arrow keys or W, S, O and P to move; A and D to strafe (or hold C); Shift to run; E to use; Space or the left mouse button to fire; Tab for the map; T to chat in multiplayer; F for fullscreen.
- On touch screens the page shows two on-screen joysticks. On phones it suggests hiding the browser toolbar.
What you need
- A browser with WebAssembly; the page shows an error without it.
- A keyboard and mouse, or a touch screen. No gamepad support is documented.
- Files: none. The shareware data loads for you.
Good to know
- Doom's original multiplayer protocol advances only when every player's input has arrived, so a match is only as smooth as the slowest connection. Cloudflare also notes that abrupt disconnects, such as closing a browser window, are handled poorly.
- Music is off (the page starts the game with Chocolate Doom's
-nomusicoption); sound effects play. - The port's source code is under the GNU GPL. The multiplayer server is a separate Cloudflare project.
- The original Doom was made by id Software and released for MS-DOS on December 10, 1993, with its first episode distributed as shareware.
