rtcw.pieter.com is a browser version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer, run by Pieter Levels as a non-commercial, unofficial preservation project. It is built from iortcw with the WebAssembly patches of Wwasm, a single-player browser port, plus GL4ES to draw through WebGL 2. You type a player name and join the site's live server, where bots play alongside people. The start page shows who is online, the current map, top players for 24 hours, 7 days and all time, and a countdown to a daily match.
How to play
- Enter a player name and press Play. The first load downloads about 375 MB of game data, cached for later visits.
- You start at the game's team and class selection screen. Click the screen to capture the mouse. Alt+Enter toggles fullscreen.
- On touch screens, the left stick moves, you drag anywhere to look, and the shoot and jump buttons sit at the bottom right. Scores and chat buttons sit at the top left. Upright and sideways both work.
- With a gamepad, the left stick moves and the right stick looks. The right trigger fires, A or the left trigger jumps, B crouches, X uses and reloads, the bumpers switch weapons, the D-pad picks weapons 1 to 4, Y shows scores and Start opens the menu.
- The daily match starts at 8 PM UTC, and the start page can send browser notifications.
What you need
- A browser with WebAssembly, WebGL and IndexedDB storage.
- A keyboard and mouse, a touch screen, or a gamepad.
- Files: none.
Good to know
- The main map is mp_beach, a beach landing where the Allies breach a wall with dynamite and steal secret documents.
- Pieter Levels launched the site on June 11, 2026 and added bots that night. He wrote that an AI model did the port in about an hour of his time.
- Touch and gamepad controls were added in October 2026.
- The site calls itself an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with id Software, Activision or Bethesda Softworks.
- Return to Castle Wolfenstein was developed by Gray Matter Studios, with multiplayer by Nerve Software, and released for Windows in November 2001.
