Pixelsuft HL is a browser build of Xash3D FWGS, an open-source engine written to be compatible with the GoldSrc engine behind Half-Life. The developer Pixelsuft compiled it with Emscripten to asm.js and published it in June 2021. Its launcher downloads a Half-Life data package in parts, or reads a ZIP of your own game files, and also lists Opposing Force and Russian-language packages.
How to play
- On the start page, leave the memory size at its default of 150 or change it, then press Start.
- Under Game Options, choose where settings and saves go: IndexedDB, LocalStorage, or memory only. The page warns that IndexedDB needs a proper exit from the game to save, and that LocalStorage can run out of space.
- Choose the game data: Half-Life EN (214 MB), Opposing Force EN (221 MB), Half-Life RUS (304 MB) or Opposing Force RUS (224 MB), or select a local ZIP file.
- Press the launch button. The command line is filled in for each package; the default is
-dev 1 -game valve. - During play the page offers options to lock and hide the mouse pointer (on by default), resize the canvas and go fullscreen.
What you need
- A browser with WebGL.
- A mouse and keyboard. No touch or gamepad support is documented.
- Files: none with the listed packages. A local ZIP must come from your own copy of the game.
Good to know
- The launcher marks English Half-Life as "MENU LAGS" and both Opposing Force entries as "BUGGED (old ver)".
- Multiplayer only ever worked on the maintainer's local test server, so none is offered.
- The source repository was last changed in June 2021.
- The original Half-Life was developed by Valve and released for Windows on November 19, 1998.
