q1.pieter.com is a browser version of QuakeWorld, the internet multiplayer version of Quake, run by Pieter Levels as a non-commercial, unofficial preservation project. It uses the FTE QuakeWorld engine compiled to WebAssembly. You type a player name and land in a deathmatch on the site's live server. The start page shows who is online, the current map, top players for 24 hours, 7 days and all time, and a countdown to a daily match.
How to play
- Enter a player name and press Play. The page downloads the engine and Quake's shareware data, under 25 MB, and joins the server.
- W, A, S and D move, the left mouse button fires, the right mouse button jumps and Tab shows scores. T opens chat. Alt+Enter toggles fullscreen.
- On touch screens, the left stick moves, you drag anywhere to look, and the shoot and jump buttons sit at the bottom right. Scores and chat buttons sit at the top left. Upright and sideways both work.
- With a gamepad, the left stick moves and the right stick looks. The right trigger fires, A or the left trigger jumps, the bumpers switch weapons, the D-pad picks weapons 1 to 4, Y shows scores and Start opens the menu.
- The daily match starts at 8 PM UTC, and the start page can send browser notifications. On desktop, a Live badge opens a spectator view while people play.
What you need
- A browser with WebAssembly and WebGL. The game connects over WebRTC and falls back to WebSocket.
- A keyboard and mouse, a touch screen, or a gamepad.
- Files: none.
Good to know
- The page loads only the shareware
pak0.pak, so the server runs maps from Quake's first episode. - Pieter Levels launched q1.pieter.com on June 10, 2026 as DOS Quake linked over a virtual null modem, and switched it to QuakeWorld on FTE the same day.
- Touch controls arrived on October 7, 2026, gamepad support on October 13, and WebRTC networking with the spectator view in late October.
- The site calls itself an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with id Software.
- Quake was made by id Software and released as shareware for DOS on June 22, 1996. QuakeWorld followed in December 1996.
