ZQuest Classic is a free, open source engine for making games similar to the original NES Zelda. This page is its experimental web version, which can also be played on mobile devices. It lists community-made quests that you can open and play in the browser. The original The Legend of Zelda was released in 1986 in Japan by Nintendo R&D4 as an action-adventure game for the Famicom Disk System, with later versions on the NES.
How to play
- Pick a quest from the Quest List, which can be sorted by Rating or Name, and press Play.
- If a save file already exists for it, the quest loads at once. Otherwise the page asks you to name a new save file.
- Default keys: Z is A, X is B, Q is L, W is R, Enter is Start, Space is Map, and A, S, D and C are Ex1 to Ex4.
- Keys can be changed in the ZQuest Classic menu under Settings. On touch screens the page also shows on-screen buttons for the arrows, Start, Map, L, R, A and B.
What you need
Nothing to install or upload. You choose from the quests listed on the page. The page says it is best enjoyed with a gamepad.
Good to know
- The page can attach a local folder for save files and quests. It warns you to pick an empty folder or back up what is in it. Desktop Chrome and Edge can keep a folder attached and synchronized. Other browsers copy files into browser storage one way, and you can download them from there.
- The web version is experimental, with occasional sound hiccups and other bugs. The page says most quests that the Windows version handles should work.
